How to pick a plumber in Texas without getting burned

Five questions we ask before we put a plumber on the list — and that you should ask before you write a check.

Most homeowners only call a plumber when something has already gone wrong. By then you're stressed, the floor's wet, and you're looking at an after-hours rate. So you say yes to the first quote.

That's exactly when you get the worst version of every plumber.

Here's what we look for before we put a plumber on the list.

1. License and insurance, in writing

In Texas, a master plumber must hold a TDLR license. The number is on the truck and on the website if they're proud of it. Ask for both: the master's number and the apprentice's. Verify the master is still active on the TDLR website. It is a quick check and it is worth making.

While you're at it, ask for general liability and workers' comp. A plumber who can't produce a certificate of insurance does not work in your house.

2. The flat-rate vs. time-and-materials answer

Ask: "Is this flat-rate or time and materials?" The answer should be immediate and matter-of-fact. If they hedge, that's information.

Flat-rate isn't always cheaper, but it tells you what you're paying before they start. T&M can be honest if you trust the plumber, but it's how most surprise bills happen.

3. Who does the actual work

Some companies are licensing fronts — one master and a crew of apprentices doing the work unsupervised. Ask who's coming today, and whether they're working under direct supervision. There's a real legal answer to this question, and a good plumber knows it.

4. Their warranty wording

"We stand behind our work" is not a warranty. A real warranty says how long it lasts and what it covers. Get it on the invoice. If that dishwasher install leaks later, you want to point at the line.

5. How they handle the no

The best test of a plumber is how they handle pushback. Ask why a quote is what it is. Ask if there's a cheaper option. Ask if it can wait. The good ones answer like a doctor — clearly, with the trade-offs spelled out. The bad ones get short with you.

If you're calling someone on the Go2Guy directory, you've already done this work. That's the whole point of the list — we have asked these questions for you.
